David Joseph Smith passed away at his home in Paris, Ontario on February 28, 2023, at the age of 66 after his courageous battle with cancer. Beloved son of Donald and Rowena Smith (Fallon), husband to Patricia (Gervason) and former spouse of Deb Smith. Cherished father to Chris (Danielle), Dan (Nicole), and Rachel (Braden), and step-father to Tiffany Benoit (Aaron). Loving grandfather to Hayden, Harlowe and Emmersyn; Brielle, Kesleigh and Elleigh; and Oliver. Sadly missed by his brothers, Jim (Cilla) and Tim (Donna) as well as his nieces, nephews and extended family. Dave is reunited now with his brother Dennis, sister-in-law Josephine, and nephew Caleb.
Born and raised in Chatham, Ontario, Dave had a zest for life, was adventurous, hard-working, and young at heart. Dave was very resilient and lived an extremely fulfilled life. Retired last year from Oregon Tool (Blount Canada), Dave was passionate about his career as a millwright and was known as a “Mr. Fix-It”. He was willing to lend a helping hand to anyone and there was nothing he couldn’t fix. He was known for his love of his motorcycle, corvette, the Blue Jays, coffee, and his cats, Sassy and Phoebe. He dabbled in gardening, kayaking, woodworking and loved to camp and enjoyed a good bonfire. His love of life was only surpassed by his love of family and friends. Dave impacted so many lives and the best way to honour him is to always be positive and be grateful for the little things. Dave fought a good fight and battled Esophageal Cancer until the end. We take comfort in knowing that Dave is no longer suffering and is at home with his Lord.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Agzarian of St. Joseph's Hospital and Dr. Dhesy-Thind of the Juravinski Cancer Centre, Hamilton as well as the first responders for their excellent support and care. Our deepest gratitude to the Paris Thursday Night Group for their unwavering support throughout Dave’s journey.
Cremation has taken place and an open house to celebrate Dave’s life will occur on: Saturday, March 11th, 2023, from 2-4 at Sojourn Church, 112 Scott Avenue, Paris, Ontario and on Sunday, March 26th, 2023, from 2-4 at the Oaks Retirement Village, 80 McNaughton Avenue in Wallaceburg, Ontario.
In honour of Dave’s wishes, donations can be made to Rosewood House in Brantford or your local foodbank.
