Obituary for David Michael Szabo

It is with great sadness to announce the passing of our husband, father and grandfather, David Szabo.

Dave passed peacefully on December 16th, surrounded by his wife and partner of 40 plus years, Lynda Prouse and his children, Shannon Szabo and her husband Rob, and his son, David.

Dave was a 38-year employee of Chrysler Canada, specializing in health and safety when he retired. Never one to be idle, he got a truck driver’s license and went on to drive for many years for a landscaping company in the summer and snow removal in the winter, where he navigated the dangerous hills on the Milton escarpment.

Born in Windsor, he relocated to Mississauga, where he met his future wife, Lynda, playing their favourite sport, baseball.

Known as “Daf” to Lynda (because he loved daffodils) she became his “Lolly”, the two purchased an 1862 home in Burlington, which he maintained, never letting anyone else do the work for him. The home’s gardens quickly became a sanctuary for birds, many living in the birdhouses he built. Dave was also an excellent self taught woodworker and built much of the home’s furniture.

Dave loved to fish on his boat, the “Lolly in the salmon derby, letting the small ones go while hoping for the big one that he eventually caught and won a prize for.

Lynda and Dave spent many weekends collecting antiques, and he was always so supportive and proud of her accomplishments as a writer and author of books.

The pair were huge animal lovers and their Burlington home was also home to their many pets including Cinder, Tig, Scooter, Dusty, Buddy and Joey.

Dave loved his grandchildren, Zaria, Braedon, Aaliyah and Cole and was always happy to hear of their going-on’s.

Most recently Dave and Lynda moved to Paris, Ontario.

Dave will be greatly missed by his family and friends including sister Terri, her husband Brian, brother Pete, his wife Cathy and father Peter Szabo. Also, sister-in-law, Marlene Dick, her husband, Dave and their children, Paul and Bryan, brother-in-law, Terry Prouse, his wife Lynne and their children, Nikki and Stacee.

Dave cared deeply about his mother and father-in-law, Bob and Vera Prouse and came to think of them as his own parents. Playing cards with them and Lynda was one of his favourite pastimes.

He was pre-deceased by his mother, Teresa, who he adored.

Dave was a down to earth guy who always thought of others first and always before himself. He will be deeply missed and thought about always.
As per David’s wishes, there will not be a funeral. Family will gather at a later date for a celebration of Life.
No Flowers, please do something kind for someone else in Dave's Memory.
