Suddenly, at Brantford General Hospital, with his wife at his side, on Sunday August 4, 2019, at the age of 68 years.
Beloved husband to Kathy (nee Rogers); cherished dad to Craig, Karyn (Jay), Jeanette, and Sarah “Suzi” (Luis); loved grandpa to Brooklynne; much loved son to Anne Sales and the late Herb; dear brother to Carol, Susan, Anne Marie and Lorie. Also survived by many nieces and nephews and his “grandpuppies” Squirt and Zero. Predeceased by his sister Diana Seib and “grandpuppies” Wilbur and Nikki.
Paul was a 30-year employee of the City of Brantford. He loved fishing, hockey, and “building sandcastles at the beach”. He cared deeply and endlessly for his family and he was fiercely loyal and protective of those whom he loved.
Friends may call at the Wm. Kipp Funeral Home, 184 Grand River St. N. Paris, on Tuesday (Today) from 2-4 & 7-9 PM. Funeral Services will be held in the funeral home chapel on Wednesday at 11:00 AM. Cremation to follow.

The Sales’ Family Story
Born Kathryn Jean Rogers in Brantford ON, June 21, 1952. Raised with her brother James there, she spent her summers vacationing on the shores of Lake Erie at the family cottage at Long Point. She was a member of the Brantford Synchronized Swim Team and also enjoyed bowling and roller skating. She graduated from Pauline Johnson Vocational Collegiate in 1970. Her employment career began at the early age of 11, delivering the Toronto Star to about 60 customers in the wee hours of the morning before school. She advanced to part time piece-work making bows for a family run chocolate box company called Artistic Packaging and moved into the factory at age 13 after school and summers creating the beautiful fancy chocolate boxes for Smiles & Chuckles, Laura Secord, Ganong’s, Moirs etc.
On January 12, 1951, Herbert Paul “Butch” Sales arrived at the Paris Willett Hospital. He spent his early years wintering in Paris, either on the backyard rink, local ponds or at the Paris arena. He was also an avid bowler. Summers found him on the beaches of Red Bay (north of Sauble Beach), fishing, monopolizing the delivery of newspapers to seasonals and tourists and terrorizing his five sisters at the family cottage.
He started employment at the Paris arena part –time in the early 60’s scraping the ice and barrel flooding. He work alongside the likes of Jack Powell, Gord Johnson, Jack Davies and Rex Wilson. He advanced to driving the Schomberg tractor mount resurfacer at age 14. Payment in those days was a “fistful of dollars” after completing a 30 hour weekend shift. His main love was hockey. At Bantam age, he played Midget Select, Juvenile and Jr. C, all in the same season. He was a member of the Paris Mounties Jr. C 1967 championship team before moving on to the Brantford “Majors” Jr. B hockey club where he played with Pat Hickey. The next stop was the Brantford Jr. A club in the Provincial League against teams like Detroit who Mark and Marty Howe played for.
In 1967, while playing in Brantford, he took a part-time position at the Brantford & District Civic Centre where he met Kathy who was an usherette for events. Cec Nobes was the Manager. The romance was on, Kathy and Paul spent all their spare time together, rollerskating, working at the Civic Centre and at Artistic Packaging, or attending hockey games: Paul as a player, Kathy as a cheerleader and at the beach.
Paul graduated from Paris District High School in 1970 and went on to attend McMaster University. Prior to his full time employment at the Brantford & District Civic Centre, he managed Artistic Packaging.
The wedding took place at St. James Anglican Church in Paris on a very hot August 7 in 1971 and they settled in Brantford. Rumour has it that the Bride and Groom left on their Honeymoon in matching red velvet hot pants. There might even be a few pictures!!
Kathy accepted full time employment with the Regional Assessment Office in Feb 1972, remaining there until the birth of their son Craig in 1975. They were also blessed with three daughters, Karyn in 1977, Jeanette in 1981 and Suzi in 1987. Kathy gave up her career to stay at home with the children, spending summers at Sauble and after the birth of Suzi becoming a School Bus Driver, now in her 24th year. Hence the email address “beachbuslady”. In between serving in many volunteer capacities at their church and sitting on multiple Home & School and School Councils, Kathy has also co ordinated and produced the annual Home Exhibition show at the Brantford Civic Centre for over 30 years, a full time career in itself with over 75 exhibits.
Paul was hired as a full time Maintenance employee by Cec Nobes at the Civic Centre in 1972 and worked with Bill Campbell, developing a close friendship with Bill and his wife Maud, who became Godparents to all of the Sales siblings. It was while he was working full time maintenance that Thelma Learn suggested Paul apply to the Arena Management Program at Humber College. Under the tutelage of Ebbie Bishop, he graduated with Honors in 1978. He advanced to the position of Assistant Manager under the mentorship of Thelma Learn in 1981. He was appointed Manager upon Thelma’s retirement in 1983. A member of the O.A.A., ORFA and the I.A.A.M, Paul became Director of Entertainment Centres which included the Sanderson Centre for the Performing Arts and the B.&D.C.C. In 1991, he moved on to become Director of Tourism & Entertainment Centres and was then appointed Director of Tourism, Entertainment and Community Centres. During his tenure, Paul restructured the management team at the B.&D.C.C., promoting Alumni Bill Campbell to Superintendent of Building Operations and Carolyn LePage (Neil) to Administrative Co-ordinator. When Campbell retired, he hired Bill McIsaac to replace him. Jane Querin was transferred from Tourism to become Marketing Co-ordinator for the Entertainment Centres. Both McIsaac and Querin went on to become Managers at the Civic Centre.

In 1997, with 30 years of devoted service to the citizens of Brantford and no further challenges to be met, Paul and Kathy retired to Sauble Beach. Paul’s lifelong goal when he met Kathy was to retire at age 45 and move to the beach. It only took two years longer than planned. Here they owned and operated “Lakeside Village Variety” for several years. Paul was once asked “How do you retire at 47?” The answer “work 16 hours a day, seven days a week for 20 years and live on an offer from OMERS you can’t refuse”.
The Sales’ now reside on a 200 acre farm retreat surrounded by wildlife. Kathy continues to drive school bus and hosts visitors at the KitWat Marina/Motel in the summer. Paul spends his summers playing at the beach, building castles, driving his “John Deere” tractor or 4 x 4 truck. Winters are spent in front of the wood stove or dog sitting the “Grand puppies”.
The future will be history as we watch the sun rise in the east while the moon is setting in the west as we complete this edition.
