Joe immigrated to Canada from Czechoslovakia with his parents and four younger siblings when he was 11 years old. With much determination, he learned English, helped his parents with their mixed farm, completed high school as a mature student and went on to work as a draftsman and mechanical designer at Babcock-Wilcox and Joy Manufacturing in Galt. Joe was also passionate about agriculture and farmed with his family in the Branchton area for almost 50 years. The first enterprise was finishing beef cattle, then they transitioned to cash cropping, built a commercial grain elevator, and grew and handled pedigreed seed. He was never afraid of hard work or being the first to adopt new technologies. Joe was active in the Brant County Federation of Agriculture, local Committee of Adjustment, Beef Producers for Change, Soil and Crop Association, and the Canadian Seed Growers Association. He also enjoyed sharing his knowledge and farm data when hosting tours for students from University of Guelph. In their retirement at Puslinch, Joe enjoyed photography, woodworking and shared his creations with his family. They were avid gardeners and bird watchers. An eternal optimist for 96 years, Joe never gave up on anything or anyone.
