Obituary for Lois Lillian Sewell (Russell)

SEWELL: LOIS LILLIAN (nee Russell) passed away peacefully at her residence in Brantford on Friday April 7, 2023.
Born in Markdale, Ontario on July 13, 1932, to Fred and Lillian (Fisher) Russell, Lois was one of 12 children. She would often comment on a happy childhood making their own fun.
On September 29, 1951, she married Murray Sewell. For 44 years they worked together every day to become successful farmers near Rocklyn Ontario. After a busy week, nothing suited them better than going to a neighbourhood dance with friends. Lois (and the girls) maintained a huge vegetable garden and she loved to sew for her three girls. She was well known as a fabulous cook with biscuits and butter tarts always in demand. There was always room for one more at the table. They both made sure friends and family were always welcome.
Both Lois and Murray were pillars of Temple Hill United Church where she was a convener for the annual turkey dinners and church treasurer. The Rocklyn Fall Fair was a big tradition, and they encouraged their girls to take advantage of education and every opportunity that came along. In 1995 they moved to Meaford – even though Dad still had cattle!! Lois really enjoyed being a volunteer for the Meaford Hospital Auxiliary, playing cards and shared her gifts as a self taught piano player. They enjoyed their times with Knox Presbyterian Church in Meaford. Murray predeceased Lois in 2015 after sharing 64 years together.
She was the wonderful mother of Debbie (Bill) Vogl of Metcalfe, Marilyn Sewell (Alan Kelley) of Paris and Barbara (Dan) Reid of Healdsburg California. Their first child was a stillborn son.
Proud grandmother of Rhiannon (Michael), Grant (Sarah and her son Ben), Martin (Laurie), Jacob (Taylor), Suzanne (Lee), Amber (Thomas), Zachary and Morgan (Melissa). Beloved great grandmother of Lilah, Ariel, Addison & Alyssa.
Lois was the much loved sister to Ken Russell (Donna) of Markdale, special sister in law to Marie Mills and Elva Wright and cherished aunt to dozens of nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by 10 siblings and their spouses including Walter and Evelyn Russell, Don, Pearl and Clara Russell, Elmer and Isobel Russell, Verna and Cliff Littlejohns, Ernie and Janet Russell, Burton Russell, Ivan and Maxine Russell, Maurice and Betty Russell, May and Doug Breadner and Jane and Harold Johnston. Also predeceased by Murray’s family of Dorothy and Percy Stevenson, Elsmere Mills and Jim Wight.
In 2018, Lois moved to be closer to her daughter Marilyn.
She had many dear friends and was known for her ready laugh and cheerful smile and the ability to listen without judgement. She was loved by all who met her and was a surrogate mom and aunt to many young people during her 90 years. She will be greatly missed by those whose hearts she touched.
Friends may call at the Wm. Kipp Funeral Home, 184 Grand River St. N. Paris on Friday April 14, 2023 from 2-4 & 7-9 PM.
Visitation will continue at St. Paul’s United Church (48 Broadway St. W. Paris) on Saturday April 15, 2023 from 12:30 to 1:15 PM followed by the Funeral Service at 1:30PM with Rev. Sarah Horvath officiating.
