Life Story for Barbara Lucille Sandison (Telfer)

Barbara Lucille Sandison (Telfer)
SANDISON - Barbara
At Brantford General Hospital on Friday, September 11, 2009; Barbara Lucille Telfer of Paris, in her 91st year; beloved wife of the late Jack Sandison (1994); loving sister of the late James Telfer (1999); sister-in-law of Hilda Telfer of Port Colborne and Iris Churchward of Brantford; also survived by niece Joan Telfer Faux and her husband Alex Faux of Stevensville and their sons Justin and Peter, and nephews Robert and Thomas Churchward. Barbara graduated from McMaster University in Hamilton in 1941 with a BA in French and English. She later became Head of the Girls' Physical Education Department at Brantford Collegiate Institute for over 25 years, retiring in 1971. After retirement, she continued part-time teaching at Paris District High School, including some evening classes in dance for members of the community. For many years tennis was her first love and she was well know for winning many singles and doubles Championships in Brantford, Paris and district, and also at McMaster University. Barbara was also a very good golfer and in latter years was named an 'Honourary Member' of the Paris Golf Club where she played up until very recent years. Her competitive spirit also carried over into the horse world, being an avid horsewoman all her life, initially showing English riding horses in the early years at Paris, Burford and Rockton Fall Fairs, and later she became intensely involved in the equestrian discipline of dressage, being one of the earliest members of the first dressage organization ever established in Ontario over 40 years ago. From then on she competed successfully in dressage competitions and often held riding clinics in the indoor arena which she built on their home property on Paris Links Road. She continued to ride well after her 70th birthday. Sports were not her only hobby however, she was also an accomplished water colour artist, loved birds and dogs, and always enjoyed the challenge of a good game of bridge with her friends. Barb loved the family home, Bendemere Lodge, and spent endless hours over the years creating a beautiful garden along the Grand River flats below the house. Her friends will sadly miss her. Memorial funeral service will be held at the Wm. KIPP FUNERAL HOME, 184 Grand River Street North, Paris on Tuesday, September 22 at 1:00 p.m. Reverend Joel Sherbino of Paris Presbyterian Church officiating. Cremation will be followed by interment in Paris Cemetery.
