Obituary for Liuda "Linda" Kuzmickas (Gecas)

Kuzmickas, Linda /Liuda
Passed peacefully, on Thursday, April 18, 2013 at Park Lane Terrace, Paris, Ontario. Born March 3rd 1925 to Vaclovas and Liuda Gecas in Plunge , Lithuania. Linda was pre-deceased in 2003 by her husband of 57 years, Alfonsas. Loved and loving mother of Al and his wife Joan of Caledonia, and Nijole of Vancouver B.C; beloved sister of Walter /Vaclovas Gecas (Angele) and the late Violet Gecas; the late Dennis /Zenonas Gecas (Eleanor); “baby brother” Paul and his late wife Isobel Gecas; and aunt to many nieces, nephews and cousins in Canada, U.S. and Lithuania. Also pre-deceased in 2012, by her dear nephew and godson, John Gecas.
Escaping war-torn Lithuania with her parents and brothers in 1944, Linda met and married Alfonsas in a displaced persons’ camp in Germany. They subsequently emigrated to Canada, settling in Paris in 1951, where she went to work at Penmans and later Pride of Paris. Linda was an ardent and devout member of Sacred Heart Church and a loyal member of the Catholic Womens’League. An avid gardener, her flowers were admired by all, not least by her former pastor, Father Smye, who, with her consent, regularly raided her garden to decorate the church altar. An exceptional cook, Linda is fondly remembered by many friends and extended family for her generous, warm hospitality and Lithuanian delicacies (especially her Napolean torte).
Linda felt extremely blessed to have been able to see and say good-bye to so many friends in her final days. A special thank you to Dr. R. Williams, Pastor John and the compassionate staff at Park Lane Terrace for Linda’s palliative care.
Friends and family will be received at the Wm. Kipp Funeral Home, 184 Grand River St. N. Paris, on Sunday April 21, 2013 from 2-4 & 7-9PM. Parish prayers will be held from the funeral home Sunday at 8:45PM. A funeral mass will be celebrated by her pastor and friend, Rev. Michael Bennett, at Sacred Heart Church, 17 Washington St, Paris on Monday April 22, 2013 at 10:30 AM.
Interment will follow at St. John’s Lithuanian Cemetery, 2185 Stavebank Road, Mississauga. If desired, donations can be made to Sacred Heart Church, Paris; or a charity of your choice.
