Life Story for Stanley Leroy Tose

Stanley Leroy Tose
TOSE, Rev. Stanley Leroy – On the 20th of June 2009 at Brantford General Hospital, aged 83 years and 13 days, Stanley Leroy Tose, beloved husband of 60 years and dear companion of Norma (née Crawford); cherished father of Walter and Aggie Tose (Haliburton), Susan (London), Barbara (Ottawa), Margaret and Simon Grocock (Thorpe, England), Ellen and her husband Hugh Briggs (Thunder Bay); grandfather to Molly and Thomas Grocock; Andy Dawson, Terry Casey (Corey), Kelly Stewart (Doug); Kristen, Ashley and Jason Briggs; great-grandfather of Cole Briggs, Emma Dawson and Zoë Stewart. Born 7 June 1926, the only child of Thomas William Tose and Olive Edith Irene Burdick, Stanley grew up in the community surrounding Camlachie, Ontario. Following a short time in the Canadian Army at the end of W.W. II, Stan attended the University of Western Ontario where he received his B.A. in 1950. He continued his studies at Queen’s University Theological College in Kingston, Ontario from 1950-1953. He received his B.Div. and was ordained in the United Church of Canada, London Conference in 1953. He received his Masters of Sacred Theology in Christian Education (S.T.M.) at Drew University in New Jersey in the spring of 1955. He served the United Church of Canada and the communities of Westport, Battersea, Montclair (N.J.), Rydelbank, Etobicoke (Kingsway Lambton), Paris (St. Paul’s), Ancaster (Ryerson) and Bethel from 1950 to 1976. He also served as Field Secretary for the United Church, Hamilton Conference, for 6 years during that time period. He taught Psychology, Sociology and Political Science at Conestoga College from 1970 until his retirement in 1990. Always interested in politics, Stan was a staunch member of the NDP party for many years and only recently joined the Green Party. In local affairs, Stan was a member of the School Board for Paris during the 1960s; he volunteered on the Paris Committee of Adjustment from 1977 to 1994; and he contributed significantly to the provision of healthcare in Paris and the Brant area through his years of involvement with the Paris Willett Hospital Committee. Stan was an avid curler for over 50 years, winning many bonspiels and trophies at various levels of the sport, but was best known for his sportsmanship and friendship. He enjoyed life, particularly time spent with family and friends at the family cottage. Stan and his wife Norma devoted their lives to helping others and lending aid and friendship whenever called upon. He will be remembered for his kindness, generosity of spirit, and his ability to welcome new people into his life and put them at ease. He lived his life well and fully. His legacy is that which he has given and will live on in all who knew him.
The family would like to thank Dr. McDonald and all the staff at the Brantford General Hospital who looked after Stan over the past few months, especially those of the Palliative Care Unit. Their kind and compassionate care in his final days eased his passing and comforted the family immeasurably.
A Service of Thanksgiving will be held at St. Paul’s United Church on the 11th of July 2009 at 2:00 p.m. Cremation has taken place. Donations to St. Paul’s United Church, The Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Palliative Care Unit of Brantford General Hospital would be appreciated.
