A memorial service will be held Thursday for a lifelong Paris resident who served many roles in the community.
Gordon Boultbee died Sunday. He was 88.
A retired Bell Canada employee, Mr. Boultbee was the last chairman of the Paris board of education. He also served on the Paris planning board, library board and with several community groups in Paris and the surrounding area.
"He started with the Kinsmen Club and from there he because involved in a lot of other things including the school board, the planning and the library boards," son Paul, who lives in Red Deer, Alta., with wife Glynis, said Monday.
"He believed that if you're going to live in a community, you should be committed to your community and that you have to take responsibility for it.

"I think that's what I'll remember most about him is his sense of responsibility and commitment."

In addition to his son, Mr. Boultbee is survived by his wife Elsie and daughter Jane and her husband, Gerry Hooker, of Cambridge.

Mr. Boultbee attended St. James Anglican Church serving as people's and rector's warden.

He also was a volunteer driver for the Canadian Cancer Society and a blood donor, his son said.

"He had a good sense of humour, something he passed on to both me and my sister, Jane. Dad was an amateur actor back before he was married and it was something that he would get involved with periodically in his life.

"His gift for acting was something that he passed on to me and he also had a flair for the visual arts. Both of us -my sister and me -are visual artists."

Mr. Boultbee was devoted to his family, his son said.

"Whenever we did something - like go on vacation -we did it as a family. We all planned it together and went together."

Mr. Boultbee worked at Northern Electric from 1941 to 1948 and then moved to Bell Canada until his retirement in 1981.

The memorial service will begin at 1 p.m. at St. James Anglican Church, 8 Burwell St., Paris.
