The red traffic lights

Vince and I first met in 1975 when we were transferred from Montreal to Calgary. He ventured out on a cold, dark, snowy night to collect us from the airport and transport us to a downtown apartment. His willingness to help at any time never wavered, it was simple, if you needed assistance, Vince and Joan were there. Years of working together, visits and family dinners ensued. We were totally opposite in many respects, Vince loved Jazz but I hated it and he did not understand what the word sport meant, whereas I am a sports fanatic. We did however both love the "Goon Show". Our differences did not prevent us from having hours of discussions on every topic under the sun including our common profession - water treatment. A glass of wine for him and a beer for me invariably helped and almost every chat started with Vince relating how he had hit every traffic light at red on his last car trip. The year 1988 found us living in Cold Lake, which necessitated a trip back to Calgary for the Olympics and yet another opportunity to "bunk at the Westlakes". This was one time when even Vince had to acknowledge that a sporting event was happening and deep down I think he had a soft spot for Eddie the Eagle. We finally managed to play host instead of recipients when Vince and Joan came to visit us in Cold Lake and again a few years later when we lived in New Jersey and they travelled over from Ontario. I will be eternally grateful for the fact that there are so few traffic lights on the major highways. Sleep well dear friend, it's all green lights from now on.
